Other than the name and address section of the tax return, you would think the filing status and dependency sections would be relatively easy. However, determining the correct filing status and who can claim a dependent can be a daunting task. Even the seasoned tax professional has to stop, think, look up the answer or check out what qualifies for certain filing status/dependency situations. Sometimes the "family unit" in today's society is complicated to the point it requires analysis of tax rules just to determine the correct filing status and who can or cannot be claimed as dependents. Let's look at Form 8332 and its new rules. We'll dig into these issues by using complicated real scenarios.
